New Drummers: If you haven't played before, the Clan Macleod Pipe Band has a training schedule in place (based on the Royal Pipe Band Association Drum College certificate courses) which is facilitated within the band by the Drum Sergeant. This training schedule is designed to take the new drummer through all aspects of playing the drum and reading music. All necessary assistance is provided, however, drummers are encouraged to learn at their own pace without any pressure!  

 

Experienced Drummers: More advanced drummers are very welcome. For more experienced drummers, advanced tuition (by, for instance, senior members of the Australian College of Drumming) is provided by the band periodically as required.  

 

All Tuition is provided free to band members (and Members in-training)

Pipers: The Band welcomes players at all levels. Those who have previously played with another band but have not kept up their piping skills can be coached back to full playing level or anyone with an interest but no previous experience can be given full tuition.  

 

Some knowledge of reading and a basic understanding of written music is an advantage, although the range and types of notes used in piping means that even someone with no previous experience can be trained to read music quite easily.  

 

Learning to play bagpipes begins with a practice “chanter” on which the tunes are mastered before progressing to the full instrument. Depending on the amount of time spent, it can take one year to achieve a satisfactory level of skill and to gain an adequate repertoire of tunes. (Note that bagpipe tunes are all memorised as we do not carry music as most other instruments do).  

 

Provided you are prepared to commit to joining and being an active band member, tuition is provided free of charge by the Pipe Major who has trained a large number of our current members. If you are interested in finding out more, please send an e-mail to the band.
